Finally Landed!!
When the immigrants finally landed, think about how ecstatic they must have been. After weeks of enduring the journey on sea, they finally landed on American soil. But that wasn't the end. Except for the small wealthy population, they all had to go through the immigration registration process on Ellis Island. This process started in the "Baggage Room", the first room they stand in when they enter the doors of Ellis Island Immigration Station. In the baggage room, they can check in their small bundles of possessions. Then, they can head over to the dining hall to grab something to eat. How hungry would you be after weeks of unsatisfactory meals during the journey?

HEAR THEIR STORY
Photograph of children ready to get off the steam ship and finally walking on the Land of the Free that they dreamed about for years.
The wealthy immigrants got their registration done in their home countries of during the ship ride, so they got to start their lives right away without going through long process at the Ellis Island Immigration Station.

Photographs of people carrying their luggage to check in at the baggage room in Ellis Island

American food was new to them and for some people, it took years to get used to. I wonder what these people in the photograph thought of it?
